Tenaya

We provide an expanded range of new and innovative climbing gear. Tenaya climbing shoes are our latest addition.

At BJR Climbing Equipment we wanted to offer a high quality European made climbing shoe, with something special to offer. Tenaya climbing shoes are made in Spain and have the reputation of being the most comfortable climbing shoes in the world. Our core business is repairing climbing shoes and we appreciate the high quality of construction and attention to detail, which this brand brings to their shoes. We also believe that Australian climbers will appreciate this, too.

Tenaya was founded in 1997 by José Luis Garcia Gallego, a co-founder of Boreal in the early 80’s. José's contribution at Boreal, was mainly in the design and construction of the shoes. Over the last fourteen years, Tenaya has become a brand associated with high quality and performance, at a reasonable price.
For Tenaya, making the product in Spain is very important. All of Tenaya’s workers have a very long tradition of making handmade shoes.

Tenaya has many extremely strong climbers endorsing the product:
  • Ramon Julian (World Cup Champion 2010, World Champion 2007-08, La Rambla 8c+ F.A., Realization 8c+ and the hardest onsight on USA soil The Crew 5.14c  October 2011

The company has a refined range of shoes. They are focused on unisex designs, in which women and men can have a equally great fit.

The flagship model in the range is the RA. The RA is designed to be a mass appeal shoe, capable of climbing routes of all types and grades. Ramon Julian has definitely proven the shoes worth, in this regard. The RA model is what we are stocking first. Click here to buy a pair.

An ever increasing number of climbers in France and Japan, have been choosing Tenaya shoes. Their availability, high quality and legendary fit make them an obvious addition to our range.

BJR feedback Comp

The BJR Feedback Competition’s genesis is an interest in hearing ideas from Australian climber’s on how we can make our business better - retreading climbing shoes and retailing climbing gear.

I have no lack of ideas myself, but I am still interested to hear what others think.

I have provided a rockshoe resoling service for 25 years now and I think this shows a long commitment to climbers. My repair prices have not increased in that whole time, except for the introduction of GST. If anyone can produce a better repair, we would like to see it.

Before our climbing gear store, nobody in Australia provided the range of bouldering and training gear which we have available. I wanted our climbing store to be a store which I would like to browse and purchase from. As examples, this is why we introduced multiple climbing clothing brands (why should climbers dress in surfing labeled clothing?) and a large range of helmets (so you can find the one that fits your head).

Our gear store has achieved all of our initial goals. Our retail sales help to pay the shop’s rent, help keep both Dave and I employed and add a bit fun to our day.

The reason for going online was to make our large range of climbing gear available to all Australian climbers. We think that our pricing has always been very competitive nationally. We think that many of the items we sourced directly, and a very few locally available brands, have been internationally price competitive. However, in many gear categories, Australia has been very non-competitive when compared international on-line stores. That is changing in a major way, with a number brands slashing pricing the past weeks – this will be talked about this during the feedback comp.

My attitude is that our business is just about climbing, climbers and climbing gear. When we stock an item it is more about the product and the customer who wants it, than how many units we can sell.

We believe it is important that climbers secure their climbing future, by taking responsibility for the environment associated with the climbing areas – this is why we donate 5% of sales to Track Care. Taking action to ensure access to climbing areas needs organisation, labour and cash. When climbers shop with us, they are contributing financially to the upkeep of Australian climbing areas.

Our involvement in the Sports Climbing Association, is another way we are helping to make climbing stronger.

The BJR feedback comp will be an opportunity to promote good reasons to buy locally, find out more from you about what you want and hopefully spread the word to the larger population of climbers nationwide all the good reason to shop with us – BJR Climbing Equipment.

A big day for Trackcare

Today, we reached an important milestone at the BJR Climbing Equipment shop in Blackheath. Everybody who has bought something from us can take credit for their worthwhile contribution today- helping out TrackCare.

A helicopter moved over 90 large bags, each weighing a mega amount and packed to the max with sandstone, fencing materials and concrete mix.  The local Blue Mountains Council called in the lifting power of a kick arse chopper for most of today, piloted by an absolute gun - you now know what 5% of your purchases at BJR paid have contributed towards!

Today’s effort focused on access tracks at the popular climbing areas of Mount York, Upper Shipley and Centennial Glen, Blackheath, NSW.

The brands that our BJR Climbing Equipment customers have purchased, which have done the bulk of the work towards this TrackCare project, are: BJR (ie. everyone that has dropped their shoes in for repairs), Revolution, Mad Rock, Organic, 5.10 Stealth Rubber, Verve, Petzl, Pusher and Vibram. Honorable mentions go to Matt Adams at Expedition Equipment (DMM, WildCountry and Moon) and Jeff Porter at Spelean (Five Ten and Omega Pacific) for being amazing reps for their brands and awesome supporters. Special thanks to our mates at Beastmaker – these two wooden training boards have contributed so much, to this TrackCare project.

Of course, none of this would happen without the support of the awesome team of volunteers that show up on the TrackCare working bee days and the Special Ops guys at Blue Mountains Council, who really make it all happen – Damo, who steers the ship and his crew Colin, Elmar, Keiran, Martin, Simon and all the boyz.

Finally, a special thanks to the Blue Mountains City Council General Manager, who had the leadership to push on with the project, regardless of the delays due to bad weather and the red tape…. Good on you, for getting the job done!

Secure the right fit

When selecting the best rock climbing shoe for your use, most people seem to agree that finding a pair that has a good fit is an obvious starting point.

The fastening system (laces, Velcro, etc) is designed to secure the fit, not make the fit. Sure you may use it to take up a bit of sag in one place and there is definitely a point where it can make the heel feel nicely locked in.

If you find yourself pulling on every lace hole up the shoe: that is using the laces to make the shoe fit. A good fitting climbing should feel great before you approach the fastening system.

Yanking on the fastening system is dumb. Doing this just accelerates the stretching process and deforms the shoes. Your shoes will stretch and mould to your foot over time and pulling in hard on the laces is a sign of a poor model choice for your foot shape.

Women’s rockshoe models typically have a lower internal volume that suits more slender feet. There are plenty of unisex models that also have this fitting. If you your foot that is slender or thin in profile search out these models. There are plenty out there.

Remember -
